The Fiber Cup

Permanent tractography contest on realistic diffusion MR data with known ground truth.

Diffusion MR tractography is the unique in vivo technique allowing to access the architecture of the white matter. However, validity of the reconstructed fiber bundles has not been clearly addressed, while applications are demanding more and more accurate estimates of the fiber pathways.

The Fiber Cup is a project originally developed for the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) conference in London in 2009. The goal was to provide competitors with diffusion data with known ground truth, ask them to run their tractography methods and to return the results back to us for evaluation.

Here is a sample of the MICCAI'09 conference results:

The Fiber Cup ground truth 10 tractography results

Left: ground truth fibers. Right: 10 tractography results submitted for the MICCAI'09 contest. Note the large inter-method variability.

The Fiber Cup is now permanent: anyone is free to download, process, and submit tractography results for evaluation. The goal is to eventually determine the methodology leading to the best qualitative and quantitative results.
